2017 Events

All events are held on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. at the Newmarket Lions Hall, 200 Doug Duncan Drive.

January 18, 2017 – AGM
The Annual General Meeting will include a presentation of Annual Report, presentations by the Board, and election of the new Board.

February 15, 2017 – Bring and Brag
Every member is invited to bring in a treasure to share with fellow members – it could be a mystery that needs solving, a family heirloom, a letter or document, a curiosity – it could come with an interesting or amusing or tragic history.

March 15, 2017 – From Typewriter to Tablet: The Evolution of Office Technology
NHS Treasurer Lena Thorogood will talk to us about the incredible changes in office processes due to machines, in the 50 years she has been working.

April 19, 2017 – The Friendly Rivalry
Aurora historian Jackie Stuart will talk about the friendly rivalry between Aurora and Newmarket over the years.

May 17, 2017 – The Souterrain Impressions Exhibit
The Canadian Historical Documentation & Imaging Group will display the images and carvings made in 1917 by Canadian soldiers hiding from the enemy in underground caves in France, prior to the Battle for Vimy Ridge. Please Note: There is a $5 fee for non-members to attend this special lecture.

June Meeting

Visit to Pickering College. About 40 members enjoyed a delightful evening at Pickering College on June 8. Our thanks go to Anna Cook and Kim Bilous who were our guides and hosts, and also Kumail Meghani and Ethel Kay who helped in the planning of the meeting. We started the evening with a brief history of the college, after which we were given a tour.

May Meeting

Whiskey & Wickedness
On Wednesday, May 20th, author Larry Cotton takes us on a trip up Yonge Street from Toronto to Penetanguishine between 1800 and 1875 and the many taverns along the way. Meeting starts at 7:30 PM, Main Floor, Lions Hall, Community Centre, Riverwalk Commons. Open to members and the public. Everyone is welcome.

March Meeting

This month is “Bring & Brag”. Come and be astounded by what historical documents and artifacts are cherished by local residents, members and Museum staff at this month’s meeting at Riverwalk Commons. Everyone is welcome on Wednesday, March 18th at 7:30PM-9PM.
