2019 Meeting Schedule

The Newmarket Historical Society hosts its meetings on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., Newmarket Lion’s Hall (200 Doug Duncan Dr.). All are welcome!

January 16, 2019: Annual General Meeting & Bring and Brag

The evening will begin with a brief presentation of the Annual General Report and election of the new Board for 2019. The remainder of the meeting will be our annual Bring and Brag – members are invited to bring in a treasure to share with the group!

February 20, 2019: Black History Month
Local teacher Melissa King will talk to us about her great-great-grandfather, John Henry Shepherd, who used the Underground Railway to reach Ontario. She will also share history of her grandfather, who was an important figure in the WWII Training Camp here in Newmarket.

Special Event: March 20, 2019: WWII Dam Busters: A Return Evening with Ted Barris
Ted Barris is an award-winning, bestselling Canadian writer, whose piece The Great Escape: A Canadian Story earned the 2014 Libris Non-Fiction of the Year Award. Join us for Ted Barris’ return, where he will be sharing the true story of WWII Dam Busters – the secret air raid against the hydroelectric dams of Germany’s Ruhr River took years to plan, involved an untried bomb, and included the best air crews the RAF Bomber Command could muster – many of them Canadian!
